The Story Behind Valentine’s Day
Share
Every February, we celebrate love with flowers, cards, and thoughtful gifts — but Valentine’s Day has a surprisingly rich (and slightly dramatic) history behind it.
The holiday is believed to be named after St. Valentine, a Roman priest who lived in the 3rd century. At the time, Emperor Claudius II had banned marriages for young men, believing single soldiers made better fighters. Valentine quietly defied the order by performing secret weddings for couples in love. When he was discovered, he was imprisoned — and later executed on February 14.
Legend says that while in jail, Valentine befriended the jailer’s daughter and left her a farewell note signed “From your Valentine.” Sound familiar?
Over centuries, Valentine’s story evolved. By the Middle Ages, February 14 became associated with romance in Europe, especially after poet Geoffrey Chaucer wrote about birds choosing their mates on that day. From there, handwritten love notes became popular, eventually turning into the Valentine cards we know today.
Did you know?
• The oldest known Valentine’s message dates back to 1415 — written by Charles, Duke of Orléans, to his wife while imprisoned in the Tower of London.
• Over 145 million Valentine’s cards are exchanged every year worldwide.
• Red roses became symbols of love because they were associated with Venus, the Roman goddess of romance.
• Valentine’s Day today isn’t just for couples — people celebrate friends, family, and even themselves.
Modern Valentine’s Day is really about connection, kindness, and meaningful gestures.
It doesn’t have to be extravagant. Often, the most powerful gifts are simple — a thoughtful note, a beautiful bouquet, or something chosen with care. Love lasts longest when it’s personal.
Whether you’re celebrating a partner, a best friend, or your own journey, Valentine’s Day is a reminder to slow down and show appreciation in ways that feel genuine.
